Created under a strict 72-hour deadline, Monkey 3 is the second piece in a series restricted to a pre-selected image set. The composition weaves together disparate elements: Chinese food packaging, a ram (referencing Rauschenberg’s combines), a female nude, and a cartoon monkey. To meet the time constraint, the figures are rendered in a cel-shaded style using minimalist lines and flat, solid tones.
This work also marks the second use of the Washington portrait, which was "lifted" and integrated here. The centerpiece of the work is the surprisingly intense, implied dialogue between the stoic Washington and the Anime monkey couple.
