Solo Susans
An examination of the figure during the final stages of the Pin-Up deKooning series.

For nine days (starting 5/16-27/2011) at the very end of the Pin-Up deKooning series the unique personality of Susan was exclusively pursued. This investigation was the only time during the series that the entire right side of the work was removed, leaving literally only the figure. The essentials of the figure were to remain the same; the scale, location and pose were not radically altered since it was my intention to reunite the (now missing) right side of the piece afterward.  I wanted to re-evolve the figures Rachael personality through a forced deconstruction of “Susan”. It was hoped that this would purge one of the two personalities, or simply amalgamate them into a single character.

One of the advantages of working digitally is time, or rather the absence of time when a work is under construction. Imagine the ability to peruse alternate directions for an image with little or no consequence, a concept I’m sure traditional medium artist are somewhat envious of.  It can be quite liberating, to know that a piece can go back and forth in time to different locations, with different potentials whenever a work demands (or encourages) it.  This can also become detrimental to a creationist who relies on the physical medium for empowerment.
