Woman With Umbrella - One

The “Precursors Works From 2002-2006” collection focuses on works that were pivotal to the direction my work has taken over the last four years (or so). The works are loosely connected to each other, through a figurative focus. These early works were restricted by the condition of the technology used to create them. An example of this would be the size and image quality (or resolution), all of which are fractional compared to the file sizes of my current works (most are 4GB or higher). Most machines couldn’t break the 1GB onboard memory barrier and video cards were only 128MB at best. I think of these work the same way I look at late medieval tempera paintings, they were revolutionary in their time (first introduction of perspective and natural observation) but were restricted by materials and understanding.

The works focused on manipulating the digital media to mimic the traditional mediums I had been trained to use (oil paints, pastels, pencil, charcoal, etc.). This resulted in some interesting approaches to developing an image, although at times the work felt illustrative not naturalistic. An example of this would be some of the more painterly areas, I would include “tracers” or details that I knew would exist as a byproduct of using a real medium simply to reinforce the notion of the mediums presence. Eventually these approaches would become obsolete as collage and appropriation became a conceptual anchor.
